A LYS Superintendent Writes... The Hidden Agenda of Choice - Part 1

In response to the 10/25/12 post, “The Hidden Agenda of Choice,” a LYSSuperintendent writes:
SC,
Amen to this LYSer. In my district we have watched first hand asstudents return from suspect charters having been told that the charter cannotserve the child's needs, even though it IS a public school and MUST provide fora free and appropriate education. With the emasculation of TEA and itslimited resources, no oversight entity is in a position to address this publicschool choice experiment's violation.
So, what do we do? We ignore the issues with the experiment so far andsay we MUST need even more choice. Private choices. Competition does not makeEVERYthing better. Sometimes it merely tramples on civil rights, safety andcosts.
Did you make out better with electricity competition? How about statecollege tuition? How about the run away competition of the late 1800s with noregulations on industry safety?
If you think public charters have problems following the rules... waitfor private schools taking public money. Who will police them? I wonder howwilling the elite private school will be to accept my high need, ADHD/Dyslexicchild in its perfect private world?
Plato always feared a Democratic form of government as rule of the mob.We proved him wrong by educating the mob to a higher level than anyone everimagined, adding more and more educated voters to our rolls. In the process, wecombined democratic principles, with capitalism and free public schools tocreate the most successful nation state ever.  Now we want to roll thingsbackwards with an Indian style caste system. I weep for the America that mykids may inherit if that happens. Rome may be falling... Like my political, historical and legislative references? I owe everything to my public schooleducation.
SC ResponseThe push for vouchers raises a number of disturbing, anti-egalitarianissues that the far right is aggressively pursuing.  I’ll touch on the Scary Two.
Segregation: The voucher is the tool of the segregationist.  Look at the typical private school inyour community.  You will noticethat the student population is predominantly high SES, white, and/or representsa specific denomination.  Publicschools, rightly, are prevented from openly perpetuating such a system.  At the private school, not only is thisby design, it is a selling point to parents.  Though personally I find it reprehensible, I will defendyour right to self-select a segregationist solution for your child’seducation.  But I am not willing tofund that option with public money.
Perpetuating a wealth-based aristocracy: The voucher is the tool of thewannabe aristocrat.  An enlightenedsociety works to expand opportunity and create an infrastructure that furthersthe greater good.  Public educationis perhaps our best example of this. The community provides a means to educate the masses to ensure that thecitizenry is informed, can produce and can create.  There are some (primarily the wealthy and elite) that choosenot to educate their children in the public system (as is their right).  In opting out of the system, thewealthy and elite purchases a different peer group for their children(primarily made up of other wealthy and elite children). But they pay for thisand the money that would have been used on a now private school student isreallocated to students that remain in the public system.  This is a capitalistic win/win.  The elite (who can afford it) get whatthey want. The masses get increased resources to further their education andhence expand their opportunity set.
But the wannabe aristocrat will say this is unfair.  They will say that the fair solution isthat the money should follow the student. But let’s look at the policyimplications of this seemingly fair solution.
1. The moneyfollows the student from the public school to the private school. This means thatthe students already out of the public system must first be funded. Now with allthings being equal, there is significantly less money to serve the currentpopulation of public school students. So immediately, the non-elite take a significant hit to benefit theelite (Lose / Win).
2. To prevent thesignificant defunding of public schools, the legislature adds to the educationbudget the amount that funds the private school vouchers.  Now the state is funding private schoolsthat are segregated, and/or openly promote a specific creed, and are notsubject to state accountability standards. Add to that the fact that the elitenow receive a financial incentive to participate in such a system (Lose /Win?).
But what about the families that will now be able to let their childrenescape from bad public schools and enroll in good private schools, because ofthe availability of vouchers? It won’t happen because:
A. Even with thevoucher, the price of tuition will remain price prohibitive to the poor and lowermiddle class.
B. The soft and/orhidden admission requirements of the private school will not be met.
C. The tuition ofthe private school will increase to capture the entire voucher amount.
For all the problems (real and perceived) that beset public education, vouchers are not the optimal solution. For all of the reasons discussed above (and many more), I believe that vouchers are badpublic policy.

SC,
In reference to the quote in the post, “The monthlydiatribes against school choice, vouchers, and charter schools, however, arethe weakest part of the blog.”
I felt the same way and did not bother to write.  I was turned offalso but just decided to put up with the insults to get the information Ineeded to be a better principal.
SC ResponseIf you were insulted, I can assure you that was never the intent.  The intent was to stake a position anddefend it.  In fact, I saw theposts in question as an invitation to either improve upon and/or refute theargument.  Personally, the issues Ihave with poor performing charter schools are the same issues that I have withpoor performing traditional schools. They waste public resources and underserve children who can least afford to be underserved. I have no issue withperforming charter schools, because they are public schools.  I just understand that the charterschool and the traditional school don’t play by exactly the same rule(advantages and disadvantages for both sides) so the solutions developed forone aren’t always applicable for the other.
Second, the blog does cover a wide range of topics and perspectives, from classroom issues, to campus issues, to boardroom issues to political issues. For me, I see the common thread as leadership.  I always wanted to know that those above me were thinkingand had a plan.  That made iteasier for me focus on leading my little part of the world.  I will be honest, when you pull backthe curtain in most districts, there is no plan and there is no considerationof the big picture. So my hope is that the exploration of topics across thespectrum validates that there are thinking, purposeful leaders at alllevels.  At least it does for me.
Third, we will continue to tackle the issue of vouchers.  They are on the political agenda andthey will impact public schools. To ignore that fact, would be to say that the layperson has a betterunderstanding of what is best for schools than the education professional.  For me, nothing is further from thetruth.
Finally, I am glad that at times you find that the blog is useful inyour role as a campus leader.  Thatis why the blog was born.  Eightyears ago there was a group of principals tasked with near impossible improvementmandates.  They were spread acrossthe state and they only had each other as a support network. The informal communicationweb that they shared morphed into the near daily posts that you now receivetoday. The majority of those principals were successful and have since becomeAssistant Superintendents and Superintendents, hence the expansion of topics.
Thanks for sticking with us.

SC,
Friedman designed Chile's universal voucher system for General Pinochet;it's been going on for 30 years now. Results: higher income kids took thevouchers to private schools. Lower income kids stayed in public schools, whichgot worse as funding decreased. Yes, let's listen to Friedman.
I suggest reading the article “Lessons of Chile’s Voucher ReformMovement,” by Martin Camoy.
http://www.rethinkingschools.org/special_reports/voucher_report/v_sosintl.shtml
SC ResponseA very good article that is worth your time.  It can be summarized with the followingquote:
"The primarynegative effect of school choice (vouchers) is its natural tendency to increasethe educational gap between the privileged and the underprivileged," JohnAmbler, referring to voucher plans in Britain, France, and the Netherlands, wrote in the "Journal of Policy Analysis and Management" (1994).

Common Core ELA Vocabulary Cards & 'I Can' Statements

I tell ya right now!  These will be the death of me.  When I created these for 4th grade math, I didn't know I would have people from all grade levels wanting them.  Which was fine... it was not bad at all.  Then, I had people also wanting the ELA as well for all grade levels.  Again, I don't mind at all because these.have.paid.off.BIG.TIME!  I can't even begin to explain just how much of a blessing TpT has been to my family.  The math cards are my #1 seller right now on TpT.  I FINALLY got around to printing my own set after having them for about 6 months.  I do have to say that THEY-ARE-ADORABLE!  I don't have the 'I Can' yet because folks at my school have went a little crazy with the color toner and lamination.  ANYWAYS- I am writing all this to say this...

I AM SO SORRY THE ELA ARE NOT COMPLETE YET!  Ya'll... life with two babies under the age of 3 is CRAZY.  I promised the cards with hopes that I would have ALL this free time in the summer.  Well, it didn't happen.  It just didn't.  I tried and tried, but every second of my time is consumed with my small ones.  And, I'm okay with that.. I just hope you all can be okay with that.  I am going to do the ELA, and I hope to have them ALL out by the end of December.  So, for my planning purpose and to answer all your questions about when your grade level is going to be available, I have created a schedule that I will keep... I promise!  So, check out your grade level and when the cards {vocab & 'I can'} will be available in my TpT shop.  After these, I will not be taking any custom orders at this time.  Ya'll, I miss creating things just for fun...

4th Grade: September 11st Grade: October 13rd Grade: November 12nd Grade: December 31
I'm assuming that these all will be out earlier than listed here.  These dates are the latest they will be available.  Once I complete the first set and see how long it will take, I will adjust the schedule accordingly.
Thank ya'll for understanding.  It really means a lot.  Also, I've had a lot of people commenting that the definition font on the cards is difficult to read from afar.  After printing these off, I agree.  After the ELA cards are complete, I am going to update all the math files with two versions, the original and the new version with easy to read font.  Don't worry, the ELA will come with both as well for those of you who are already using the current math version in your classroom.
We started school on Friday and this week is my first full week.  I am looking forward to this school year, and I can't wait to implement and use all the adorable things I purchased off TpT today.  I hope ya'll have a great week!

'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving

To contact us Click HERE
Hello Everyone! We started the day off with one of my favorite books to read this time of year.  Have you ever read "'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving?" It is a fun little story written by Dav Pilkey about a class of little kids who go on a field trip to a turkey farm the day before Thanksgiving. Well, when the kids find out what Farmer Mack Nugget plans on doing with the ax, they cook up a plan to help the turkeys escape!  They stuff the turkeys under their shirts and get back on the bus!!  Toooo cute!! This was the perfect book to write about what they would eat instead of turkey as a reader's response.  Making those connections brought us to brainstorming a list of yummy "turkey-free" foods!  the kids wrote amazing lists and then created a turkey stuffed character to go along with it!

We also used the book to help us with our "counting on" strategy to compose numbers in math. We made a giant Farmer Mack Nugget over-all pocket on the floor and learned a new song about putting the big number in your pocket and counting on on the second number.  the kids then got to work independently in small groups to practice this strategy.  this will be part of my math SOLVE tubs this week!

For your free 16 page mini unit using the book "Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving" click here!

The unit contains patterns for the cute little craft connection and reader's response writing activity, the poem, math tub materials and recording sheets. The unit also includes a site where you can go to see and have the book read to your kiddos, just in case you can't find the book!!

I love this little book so much!  I wish we had more time to spend on it!!

Now on to our study of the Mayflower!!

Hello Everyone,First of all, I wanted to say how much I appreciate all the sweet messages, comments and e-mails about my last post.  Our family is still heartbroken with the loss of our sweet pooch, but your love has lifted us and helped so much. Thank you.
Today at school, we began a week long  "learning through literature" celebration using Laura Numeroff's "If You take a Mouse to the Movies." I have already shared this unit with you, but I wanted to share what we did today to help understand visualization.  Being able to visualize or create a mental picture during reading can be a powerful way for students to gain comprehension. We talked about how you can be the "producer" of any "movie" you read.  As I was reading the story today, I refrained from showing the pictures.  The kids closed their eyes to try to get a picture, and then drew what they saw in their mind's camera. A little later, the kids had the opportunity to take some kids sized clapboards and tell parts of the story in small groups. I could see the kids visualizing the parts first before they verbalized!  Great job, Kiddos!!I only had time to snap a couple of pics myself, as the kids were "filming."
Kids recording sheet for visualization lesson- included in unit.

47 pages of literacy, math and science fun!

Have fun visualizing a great day! :)Joyfully!Nancy

Double Mints! Math Mints, that is!

Hello Everyone!Remember those commercials? Double your pleasure. Double your fun? Double Mint Gum! ... Ugh!  I think I am giving away my age!  Oh well! :) Today we worked hard on "Double Mints!"  We have been working some with doubles every day, but we wanted to get the kids really focused on this addition strategy and be able to use it for doubles + 1 as well.  I made a huge mint just out of butcher paper and brought in some starlight mints. The kids took turns showing a quantity of mints and deciding if it could be written as a doubles or a doubles + 1 number sentence. Then they got to make their own "math mints" out of paper plates and clear cellophane, writing some of the doubles facts on the mints!  Great job kids!
Using this along with our "If You Take a Mouse to the Movies" unit. That's why the mouse is pictured! :)

You can use this same idea and have kids write fact families, chunk words, sight words, etc. I've made these with kids the past gazillion years, and have had fun every time!  The kids thought they looked great hanging up above their desks!
That's it for tonight! Busy day tomorrow!   Thanks for stopping by for a peek into our wonder-filled world!Joyfully!Nancy

Poppin' with Sensory Details

Hello Everyone! We had a poppin' good day today!! Continuing our use of "If you Take a Mouse to the Movies" celebration, we took note of Mouse's love of popcorn and decided to use it for our lesson on using sensory details in our writing to make it more interesting and exciting to read.Of course we had to get out the hot air popcorn popper to get the full 5 senses experience!!  We had discussed the five senses before, so the kids were familiar with them.  I divided the kids up into groups with each group responsible for focusing on one of the senses while our popcorn was popping.  They wrote whatever they thought about as they were listening, watching, smelling, etc. The kids then had to share their ideas on our chart. Finally, we set off to write all about our experience.  I can't wait to share the amazing writing!!

Some things do smell "hot!"
The Popcorn activity is included in my If You Take a Mouse to the Movies unit. Click here for your free download.

I hope this lesson will help kids include sensory details in all their writing!! That would make me just POP!!!
Have a great evening!!
Joyfully!Nancy

A principal shares his first year results after working with LYS.
SC,
I just retired from XYZ school district, a district that you worked with two years ago.  As you remember, I was hired to take over an Academically Unacceptable middle school.  As a result of LYS support, the campus went from low performing to within three students in one student group of being a Recognized campus.  I have attached some charts that illustrate the gains we made in each subject area in just one year. If anyone ever doubts the power of LYS coaching and the Fundamental 5, share our results.

SC ResponseThanks for sharing!  But you give us too much credit.  Yes, coaching and support are important, but you and your staff had to execute the plan with fidelity and urgency. Simply put, “If you don’t work the plan, the plan won’t work.” As such, the improvement actually reflects the commitment and hard work of your staff, students and you.
I can think of nothing more exciting and inspiring.

A LYS Superintendent Shares... OMG!

A LYS Superintendent writes the following:
SC,
I just spentthe morning in a regional superintendents’ meeting.  There are 50 superintendentsin my region, 35 showed up.  After 90 minutes of banal topics andconversation we eventually got to "Visioning,” based on a documentprovided by the state superintendent’s organization.
Keep in mindmost of the high schools in my region are Academically Unacceptable. First, ofthe 35 superintendents present, more than half leave when the"visioning" discussion begins, so we are left with the dedicated, best and brightest.
What did thisesteemed group want to discuss? More technology for students and teachers istheir first priority, especially BYOD.  I spoke up and said thataddressing BYOD was fine, but this alone would not solve the fundamentalproblem of ineffective instruction in the classroom.  They looked at me like Ia slapped a child.
I channeledmy inner Sean, listened, and didn't say another word.  And I thought, “Seandoes this everyday.”
Hang in theremy friend.
SC ResponseJust look at itthis way. We are teachers. Sometimes we have a class full of bright students, sometimes not.  Regardless of who is in our classroom, our job is to make sure that we further the education of each student and positioneach one for a brighter future. Sometimes it just takes longer and we have to try harder, but eventually they'll come around.
